Lets challenge psychiatric labelling PDF Print E-mail
It would be great if you could take the time to sign this petition against psychiatric labelling here.  Also please join the Inquiry into Schizophrenia here An excellent way to challenge the continued use of this unhelpful and misleading term. Psychiatric diagnoses mystify people's problems. Instead we need to see each person as unique and understand their distress and confusion in the context of their lives and the social and emotional pressures they have faced. We need to have social psychological and cultural understandings given much more of a place in making sense with people about their difficulties. I think this refusal to categorise difficulties as fixed 'conditions' will lead to a more optimistic and compassionate approach. We need to continue to be curious about the unique meanings of people's psychological experiences and their ways of coping with stress.

I don't believe that labelling people is useful> a holistic approach is required to put people's experiences into perspective which considers past and present experiences.

With one hundred billion neurons connected by one hundred trillion synapses the human brain is incredibly complicated... all the pathways of the brain have not been explored and the reasons for labelling is to symplify science and make diagnosis easy. We need more research and a human approach to understand the mind of individuals who are being labelled inorder to help them. Labelling is a way of 'dealing' with them and is not helpful to them or society.

i always wonder why gp practises or drugs companies are not being sued for side effects of medications prescribed to so called 'mental health problems' people. why are they still being allowed to tarnish certain peoples' lives and get away with this process as well?

"once you label me, you negate me" .... Soren Kierkegaard, Danish Philosopher
Focus on illness not assignment. How about just people with mental health needs rather than pigeon holing anyone into just one slot. "Treatment" is a journey and it needs to be aimed towards being better (well) rather than "recovery". Every being has mental health needs, some are just more visible and pressing than others
